During these unprecedented times, sleep is one thing that we need. The unfortunate truth is that it might be the only thing we are not getting enough of due to various factors. Lockdown has been a stressful time for many people. Worry for the future and health concerns have drained people emotionally and, in turn, has caused many sleepless nights.
What is interesting is that sometimes it isn’t the emotional strain that helps people to lose sleep. Take a look at our tips for what could be causing you to have trouble sleeping, and how a few tips could give you a more comfortable and healing sleep.
Check your Bed

As obvious as it might seem, the bed is the last place that we worry about when thinking of good quality sleep. We assume that since there is a bed, it must be fine as we just need somewhere to lay down our weary heads. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Your bed and specifically your mattress could be the one reason you can’t sleep.
If you’re tossing and turning and waking up with a headache or body aches of any sort, your mattress is most likely the culprit for your sleepless nights. Inspect your current mattress, think back to how long ago you bought it, and see if it’s time for a new one.
You should invest in the best mattress you can afford, and you need to replace it at least every eight years. Since you will be sleeping on it for so long, take the time to research the best one for you. If you have posture or back problems, then getting a harder mattress with added middle support is the best way to go.

For those who move around a lot during the night, it’s advisable to stay away from spring mattresses as they bounce when you move and could wake your partner. If allergens are a concern for you, then you need to find hypoallergenic ones.
If you consider how many different types of mattresses there are, making a decision is not easy. However, we’ve discovered one that would suit most people no matter what their problems are. The mattresses specially designed for side sleepers are a fantastic improvement on the old-style beds, and Thisoldhouse.com has the list of the best of them, for better insight.
Memory foam mattresses are durable, affordable, and give solid support to the body in precisely the right places. An added benefit is that they have a longer lifespan than standard ones, making them even more appealing.
Room Atmosphere
Once you’ve sorted out your mattress, have a look at your bedroom and area where you’re sleeping during the lockdown. Things to look out for are lighting, temperature, and noise. If you have windows in your bedroom, make sure that the curtains close all the way and that there aren’t any outside lights shining through while you.
Consider the lights from street lamps or passing cars. The curtains should also be thick enough that lights won’t shine through the material. If you go to bed earlier than other people, close your bedroom door so you won’t get disturbed by passage lights going on and off. Your sleeping area ideally is one where the temperature remains constant.

If you’re fortunate enough to have climate control, then set your temperature between 60 and 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Research suggests that this is the ideal range for optimal sleep. If not, keep doors and windows closed during the cooler months, and when it’s hot, open them to a breeze. The final thing to consider is noise.
Some individuals maintain they can sleep through anything. Even though this might be true, it’s not to say that your mind doesn’t hear the noise and respond to it. Sound keeps our brains active and busy, preventing the restful sleep we need the most. Try to keep the noise to a minimum, and if you live in an area with lots of traffic or external sounds, invest in a pair of earplugs.
In Summary
When faced with stressful times, we toss and turn at night, not getting enough sleep. The blame goes to everything except for what is, at times, the most obvious. If you feel that you’re losing sleep, take a look at your bed and sleeping area to see what can be improved. Investing in a mattress that addresses most sleep issues and creating a space that promotes peaceful slumber is sure to help you get some rest during the lockdown and beyond.
