This was one event I really enjoyed because of the vast info I learned such as the brief history of the coconut, the special properties of its oil, the benefits and how it affects our health, and the risk factors of the metabolic syndrome. It was a truly enlightening afternoon spent well as Dr. Fabian Dayrit, a full-time Professor at the Department of Chemistry, at the Ateneo de Manila University and the author of the popular book Coconut Oil: From Diet to Therapy, discussed how the coconut oil and lauric acid in the Minola Premium Coconut Cooking Oil can help in our journey to a healthy lifestyle and lengthen our lifespan.
We Pinoys love eating fried food without knowing the harmful effects in our body. When I was young, there wasn’t a day that I don’t eat any “mamantika” food. The adobo wasn’t complete without it’s “mamantikang sabaw” which I drizzled over steamy white rice. When I turned 35 and had gestational Diabetes, that idea felt like “nakakaumay” and really scary to imagine my heart being enveloped by unhealthy oil and cholesterol. So, I stopped eating greasy and oily food.
To give you a brief background on coconuts:
Coconut Halvesrdquo by zole4
“The coconut is one of the most robust and useful members of the plant kingdom. It can be found on practically all tropical and sub-tropical coastlines worldwide on a variety of soils. The coconut is a major part of the diet in over 90 countries.”
A coconut is all three: a fruit, a nut, and a seed.
Here in the Philippines, it’s not only on the beach that you can find coconut trees. In our village, right now, it’s practically seen everywhere! In fact, we used to have one in the backyard but due to a really super strong typhoon, we had to cut it down. My neighbor has one in their front yard which bears bountiful of fruits during summer time. What do they do with so many? Some they give to neighbors, some they make into “healing oils” and refreshing “buko juice” or as an ingredient in popular Pinoy desserts. Indeed, these coconuts fresh or dry are very healthy.
