Where Do Cockroaches Come From & What Attracts Them?

Fossils that have a similar appearance and body structure to cockroaches have been found and dated back to the Carboniferous period. That’s 320 million years ago. Naturally, these creatures have evolved since then, you’ll find millions of them across the planet.

It’s interesting to note that cockroaches can be killed with pesticides but they can survive the radiation associated with a nuclear explosion. The good news is that they are generally harmless to humans. However, because they walk through all sorts of materials, it is likely that they will carry bacteria on their feet which will then be carried into your home and potentially past on.

Cockroaches are everywhere and, despite what people say, they will target a clean house just as often as a dirty one. That’s why you need expert help to eliminate the issue. It’s not just about knowing what attracts them, it’s about knowing how they get in and preventing this from happening.

Food

Cockroaches can survive a month without food. But, that doesn’t mean they wait for it to come to them. Cockroaches will search for food and go to where they find it. That can be the trash bin near your home or the food in your cupboards.

If your house isn’t kept clean there will be plenty of food crumbs on, the floor which will keep the cockroach full. But, even in a clean house, there will be odd crumbs and food in your cupboards.

To prevent this food from appealing to cockroaches or other pests, make sure all items are kept inside sealed containers.

However, cockroaches will also eat cardboard, wallpaper paste, soap, and even human hair. That makes it difficult for them not to find your house appealing.

It’s also why it is so important to block all potential entry points and reduce the likelihood of cockroaches visiting in the first place.

Shelter

Cockroaches are hardy creatures but they still prefer to be warm. That’s why you are likely to see more of them at the beginning of winter. They head inside to enjoy the shelter your property offers and help them survive the winter.

You can’t do much about the weather but you can block entry points to reduce the likelihood of them getting in.

Water

Like all creatures, cockroaches need water. If you have a water leak or leave water down for pets, then you’re basically offering water to cockroaches and other pests. You need to check for and eliminate any leaks. At the same time, lift pet water bowls when they are not drinking and only put water in them when your pets need it.

Keeping cockroaches away from your home comes down to making them less attractive and difficult to enter. They will go elsewhere as there are plenty of easier targets.
