Managing Diabetes is a Family Affair

Diabetes runs in the family. I didn’t expect to get it, but I did. It started while I was pregnant with my 2nd but then had a miscarriage because I wasn’t aware. In my 3rd and 4th pregnancies, I had my Diabetes managed but seemed not enough thus followed by miscarriages in the first trimester.

Apparently, I get gestational diabetes when I’m pregnant. So, I had to be managed by not just my OB-Gyne but also by an Endocrinologist. It was found that apart from being polycystic, I also have mild hyperthyroidism. I watched my weight, diet, and lifestyle. I was able to trim down from 185lbs to just 140lbs. I was on medication for 3 years and went to check-ups regularly.

In 2007, I got pregnant again. I was scared of course but with the help of my doctors and my family who continuously monitored my situation, the pregnancy was successful. But not without the agony of pricking and injecting myself but all worth it because I gave birth to a healthy baby boy.

My gestational diabetes developed to type 2 after I gave birth. So, I had to take oral medications and still watch my diet and weight. It wasn’t easy at first, but my family adapted to my needs.

To date, my family is so used to the daily routines such as healthy food on the table, we do light exercises (for me) and afternoon walks, basically maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Yes, there are cheat moments like cakes, ice cream, milk teas but those are once a month thingy.

Sanofi Philippines Panata ng Pamilya

I know that diabetes causes many complications like heart problems. So to be informed of the risks I also joined support groups and campaigns. A great example is Sanofi’s #PanataNgPamilya programs.

What are the programs of Sanofi for Diabetes?

  • Empower Patient Support Program – Persons with Type 2 Diabetes may be enrolled upon the recommendation of his or her attending physician. Patients can have blood glucose monitoring remotely and communicate to medical experts remotely via a Telemedicine Essentially, what the Empower Program ensures, especially during this pandemic, is the continuity of care and medical education for persons with diabetes.
  • Webinars like Healthier/PH sessions and partnerships with parenting & health organizations such as The Asian Parent’s FamHealthy & BayanihanMD empowers the patient and their families, giving them the ability for self-monitoring and the improvement of their lifestyle, having physical activity as well as nutrition of the whole family
  • WeHealth, an e-Health Ecosystem Program that aims to connect Filipinos with their doctors or health service providers from the safety of your own home. For doctors and care providers, WeHealth can serve as a program to reach out and connect to patients in need of care or consultation.

Your family should be aware that everyone can develop diabetes, thus each one should have a conscious effort in maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle.

Sanofi supports a whole-of-society approach in healthcare programs and policies, and urge everyone to be responsible for playing their part to promote better health for all. Having a healthy lifestyle and holistic quality of life even beyond medicines is another important factor in managing diabetes. Sanofi believes that healthcare should be as personal as possible for every type of diabetes and every person. When we talk about managing diabetes holistically, we should promote an active and well-balanced lifestyle for our families, where we get sufficient physical activity and proper nutrition, this will play a major role in reducing the prevalence of chronic disease in the coming years.

Even before the pandemic, Sanofi has been aiming to effectively bridge the gaps that many Filipinos face when it comes to accessing consultation and treatment, to really ensure the continuity of care.

To have a #HealthierPhilippines, Filipinos should attain their full health potential, and that no one should be left behind from having access to better health services and health resources.
