A Simple Guide to Losing Weight at 40

Most people in a progressive world will be quick to point out the similarities between men and women instead of focusing on the differences, but when it comes to weight gain and age, you better believe that the sexes are different. Women,40 and over have a much higher risk of heart disease, diabetes and other weight-related complications.

The proper amount of sleep is really something that benefits people of all ages and of both genders, but it is especially important for women over 40. With your hormones tugging on you from all directions, your body will need to constantly stay rested and charged for the battle. This becomes especially true if you’re also trying to lose weight. Your metabolism will be slowed down to a crawl in some instances, even more so if your body is always tired. You need to do what you can to ensure that you’re receiving at least 8 hours of sleep.

Once you hit the big 4-0, it’s time to stop acting as if it’s enough to get in shape for the summer or for that next high school reunion. It’s time that you start thinking about a real lifestyle change. You’re at a much higher risk of heart disease and other complications brought on by excessive weight, and the only way you’re going to combat this is to change your lifestyle and to begin eating right and exercising regularly.

Exercise at 40

You might be a career woman who is hard-pressed for time, but if you’re working 16 hours a day and sleeping the other 8, then weight gain is probably the least of the your worries. You’re living a lifestyle that’s far too hectic to keep up with. It’s much more reasonable that you’re working as much as anyone else, possibly raising a family to boot. But that’s no excuse to not take 30 minutes out of every day to do some yoga, to walk on the treadmill or run a mile . This is time that you have to carve out if you’re expecting to lose weight and keep it off.

If you’re a woman over 40, the odds are great that you’re on at least two different types of medications. Maybe you’re on meds for estrogen levels, your diabetes, or for any one of a hundred different things. Check to ensure that none of these medications could be attributing anything to your waistline. It’s not unheard of that some medications make it tougher to burn calories and thus aid in gaining weight. Be sure to check with your doctor.

Stay on a proper vitamin regimen. Taking the proper vitamins is critical at your age. Your body needs to be in great condition if you’re expecting it to kick in and burn calories instead of just storing them as fat reserves. And since you’re already in your 40s, your body’s proclivity is definitely to do the lazy thing and just throw everything in reserve instead of burning it. This is when you need to give your body a boost with the proper vitamins.

It’s not so much harder to stay in shape as a woman once you’re 40, but it is something that you need to focus on a little more. It’s never been so important to stay in great shape, so be sure to put down that fatty food and to do a little exercise.

  3. I really admire those women that have hit 40 and above, yet still look so slim and great. Of course, the best option is to start young. That way, by the time that you’re 40, your body is still fit and toned enough that you don’t really need to do much effort.

  4. I admire those women that are above 40 and look so great. Of course, nothing beats starting an exercise regimen young. It helps you deal with stress and helps you age more gracefully.

Your primary goal should be making small, gradual lifestyle changes that you can incorporate into your daily routine and stick with over time. That’s the ultimate secret

Another point to remember: doing weights, which is soooo easy, is a great way to keep your metabolism from sinking and the weight from coming on. I keep a couple of barbells next to the couch and when I am watching TV, I do some weight exercises during commercials. And I don’t have that “flab” under my upper arms!
